General Care Instructions for Southern Magnolias

Watering:
Water approximately every 4–5 days, adjusting as needed for weather conditions and your plant’s environment.

Sunlight:
Magnolias thrive in full sun but can also grow well in partial shade. Aim for at least four hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight each day.

Pruning:
If pruning is needed, wait until after the tree has finished blooming and prune during the active growing season.

Planting Guidelines

Magnolias grow at a moderate to moderately fast rate and do best in moist, well-drained soil. They can adapt to several soil types, including loamy, sandy and clay soils, and generally prefer slightly acidic conditions.

When planting, position the root ball approximately 2 inches above the surrounding soil level. Planting too deeply can encourage roots to grow toward the surface rather than downward, which may affect the tree’s long-term stability.

After planting, water thoroughly and add 3–5 inches of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and reduce weeds. Keep mulch at least 1 inch away from the stem or trunk.

Allow time for your magnolia to become established. Developing a strong root system can take several years.

Winter Care

If your magnolia has not yet been planted in the ground, it may remain in its container until planting conditions are suitable in early spring.

Place it in an area that receives full sun or partial shade and continue watering as needed. Protect the plant from extreme temperature changes while it is being kept in a container.

Potting & Containers

Magnolias may be grown temporarily in containers before being transplanted into the landscape. A 3-gallon container is suitable for approximately the first 6–12 months, with larger containers needed as the tree grows.

For best results, transplant container-grown magnolias into the ground in spring or fall. Water thoroughly after planting, apply mulch around the base and fertilize at planting as appropriate.

Avoid fertilizing during late fall and winter, when growth naturally slows. Consistent watering and mulching during the establishment period will help encourage healthy root development.
